I recall the VR40, it was a lively and dynamic speaker and offered real bang for the buck. Let them run awhile, listen, then decide if recapping is required. If run at low-moderate volume for a few hours that may improve if quality electrolytics were chosen to begin with. Electrolytics left idle for a long time may sound bad initially. The VRs date from the mid-90s and are likely getting close to when that should be evaluated. Definitely restore Boston Acoustics Nothing will give you the same satisfaction of hearing the details of all your loved audio. However, all this is dependent upon the caps being in good condition now. That's why I asked how they sound? Let your ears should be the starting point rather than your eyes. Great power reserve allows you to handle volume control absolutely freely without hurting sound quality. Indeed, they may even sound worse without adjusting other components. So it's likely that there is no measurable or sonic improvement whatsoever if entire film caps were used vs. The founder of BA (Andy Kotsatos) was not one to pack features in without a return. They did however use film bypass caps and would not have done so if there was no benefit. It is a bookshelf with the Vrho tweeter and a 7' bass driver I have never heard them but I am sure they sound great. If you would rather have a BS then Boston just released the VrB. electrolytic caps would have been 8-10X cost and if budget tight, pushed the speaker outside its pricing envelope. The Vrho tweeter in them are wonderful and very detailed. Often left out of the discussion is where the speaker fit as far as the manufacturer's product line? The VR was Boston's mid line, below the Lynnfield 300L & 500L.
